Overview:

The Albino Red Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a captivating and highly sought-after variant of the popular Oscar cichlid. This 2-inch juvenile is a true "water puppy," offering a unique and engaging personality that makes it an interactive centerpiece for any large freshwater aquarium. Its brilliant, pale body with solid fiery red-orange coloration creates a dramatic and striking contrast.

Key Features:

  • Stunning Albino Coloration: This fish features a solid, vibrant red-orange hue on a pale, white-to-pinkish body. Its lack of dark pigment gives it a stunning, unique appearance with characteristic pink or light-colored eyes.

  • Intelligent and Interactive: Oscars are famous for their intelligence and personality. They can learn to recognize their owners, respond to feeding cues, and are known to interact with the aquarium environment. Their curious and sometimes playful behavior makes them more than just a decorative fish—they become engaging pets.

  • Hearty Carnivore: The Albino Red Oscar is a voracious omnivore. A healthy diet is crucial for maintaining its vibrant colors and preventing health issues. A balanced diet should include high-quality cichlid pellets, as well as frozen or live foods like shrimp, bloodworms, and insects.

  • Natural Territory: These fish are native to the Amazon River basin and thrive in a habitat with plenty of hiding places, such as large rocks, driftwood, and secure decor.

Important Considerations for Aquarium Owners:

  • Size & Growth: A 2-inch Oscar is a baby fish. They grow exceptionally quickly, often reaching an adult size of 12-14 inches (30-35 cm). A single adult Oscar requires a minimum tank size of 75 gallons (around 280 liters), but 100 gallons or more is highly recommended for long-term health and to provide ample swimming space.

  • Temperament & Tank Mates: As cichlids, Oscars can be territorial and semi-aggressive, especially as they mature. They are best kept in a species-only tank or with other large, robust, and similarly-tempered fish, such as large plecos, silver dollars, and other large cichlids. Small or delicate fish will be seen as food and should be avoided.

  • Water Parameters & Filtration: Oscars are messy eaters and produce a significant amount of amount of waste. To ensure their well-being, a powerful and high-capacity filtration system (e.g., a canister filter) is essential. They prefer a temperature range of 74-81°F (23-27°C) and a pH of 6.5-7.5. Consistent water quality is paramount.

  • Experience Level: Due to their rapid growth, specific dietary needs, and potential for aggression, Albino Red Oscars are best suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists who are prepared for the long-term commitment of a large, well-maintained environment.
