The Apistogramma agassizii, or Agassiz's Dwarf Cichlid, is a stunning freshwater fish native to the Amazon River basin. These male specimens are a true highlight in any aquarium, boasting vibrant colors and a fascinating personality that will captivate any fish keeper.

Male Apistogramma agassizii are known for their striking appearance. Their coloration can vary, from fiery reds and golds to deep blues, often with a distinctive dark lateral line running along their body. As they mature, they develop elongated fins and a more intense color palette than the females, making them a beautiful and eye-catching addition to your tank.

Despite their cichlid lineage, Agassiz's Dwarf Cichlids are known for their peaceful, though territorial, nature. They are an excellent choice for a community tank with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. While they will fiercely guard their territory during breeding, they are not a threat to other tank mates, making them a rewarding species to observe.

Care and Aquarium Requirements:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a single pair, with a larger tank required for a group.

  • Water Conditions: They thrive in soft, slightly acidic water with a pH range of 5.5-7.5 and a temperature of 23-29°C.

  • Diet: As carnivores, they primarily feed on invertebrates in the wild. In the aquarium, provide a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, and supplement with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.

  • Tank Setup: Replicate their natural habitat by providing plenty of hiding places and territories. Use driftwood, rocks, and dense plant cover to create a stimulating environment. A sandy substrate is also recommended as they enjoy sifting through it.

  • Community: They are best kept in a pair or a harem (one male with several females). Good tank mates include small tetras, Corydoras catfish, and other peaceful community fish.

Add a touch of the Amazon to your home aquarium with the beautiful and engaging male Apistogramma agassizii. These fish are not just pets; they're a living piece of art that will bring endless enjoyment.
