Overview:

The Lionhead Goldfish is a popular and charming variety of fancy goldfish, easily recognizable by its distinct, fleshy hood, or "wen," that resembles a lion's mane. This Medium (M) specimen is a healthy, well-developed juvenile or young adult, showcasing the breed's most iconic features. The "assorted" designation means this fish comes in a variety of beautiful colors, including red, orange, black, white, and calico, making each one a unique and captivating addition to any coldwater aquarium.

Key Features

  • Distinctive "Wen" or Hood: The most prominent feature of the Lionhead is its unique raspberry-like growth on its head. On this ML specimen, the wen is already beginning to form and will continue to grow as the fish matures, creating its signature majestic appearance. This growth can sometimes affect the fish's vision, a trait to be aware of.

  • Assorted Vibrant Colors: With the "assorted" variety, you get a beautiful surprise. Each fish is different, displaying a range of colors and patterns that add a touch of individuality and vibrant life to your tank.

  • Rounded, Egg-Shaped Body: The Lionhead has a short, rounded body and a twin tail fin. This body shape makes them slow, deliberate swimmers, adding to their gentle and peaceful nature.

  • Absence of a Dorsal Fin: Unlike many other goldfish, the Lionhead lacks a dorsal fin. This is a key characteristic of the breed and adds to its unique profile.

Important Considerations for Aquarium Owners

  • Tank Size: Due to their potential for a large adult size and their slow swimming speed, Lionheads require a spacious environment. A single adult Lionhead needs a minimum of 20-30 gallons (75-115 liters), with an additional 10 gallons for each extra fish.

  • Water Parameters & Filtration: As a coldwater fish, the Lionhead does not require a heater. They prefer a temperature range of 65-75°F (18-24°C) and a pH of 6.5-8.0. Because they are messy eaters, a powerful but gentle filtration system is essential to maintain clean, oxygenated water.

  • Habitat & Diet:

    • Decor: The delicate wen and lack of a dorsal fin make the Lionhead more vulnerable to injury. Use a smooth, fine-grained substrate and ensure all decorations are free of sharp edges that could tear their fins or scrape their wen.

    • Diet: Feed a high-quality sinking goldfish pellet formulated for fancy goldfish. This helps prevent the fish from gulping air at the surface, which can cause buoyancy issues. Supplement with blanched vegetables (like peas) to aid digestion and maintain health.

  • Temperament & Tank Mates: Lionheads are peaceful and docile. They are best housed with other slow-swimming fancy goldfish varieties, such as Orandas, Black Moors, or Ryukins. Avoid keeping them with fast-swimming, single-tailed goldfish, as they will outcompete the Lionhead for food.
