The Blue Peacock Cichlid, Aulonocara nyassae, is a stunning and popular freshwater fish that brings a splash of vibrant blue to any African cichlid aquarium. At 2 inches, these juveniles are in a prime stage, beginning to develop the magnificent color that will become a true showstopper as they mature. This species is highly sought after for its shimmering, iridescent blue body and peaceful-to-moderate temperament.

Key Features:

  • Brilliant Blue Coloration: The most defining characteristic is the dazzling, iridescent blue that covers the body of the male. This color intensifies as he matures, creating a mesmerizing display under aquarium lighting. Females are typically a more subdued silver-brown, but still a beautiful addition to the tank.

  • Graceful Swimmers: With a sleek, torpedo-shaped body, the Blue Peacock Cichlid glides gracefully through the middle and lower levels of the tank. Their movements are elegant and captivating, making them a dynamic centerpiece fish.

  • Peaceful African Cichlid: Compared to many other cichlids, the Blue Peacock Cichlid is relatively peaceful. While males can be territorial, especially when establishing their space, they are generally not overly aggressive. They can be housed with other non-aggressive cichlids from Lake Malawi and similar species.

  • Hardy and Durable: This is a very robust and adaptable species, making it a great choice for both novice and experienced aquarists. They are tolerant of a wide range of water conditions and are known for their resilience.

Care and Requirements:

  • Tank Size: While small now, this species can grow to be 4-6 inches as an adult. A minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended for a small group to provide ample swimming space and a stable environment.

  • Water Parameters: They are native to the hard, alkaline waters of Lake Malawi. It's crucial to replicate this environment with a pH of 7.8-8.6 and a temperature range of 76-82°F (24-28°C).

  • Diet: As carnivores, they will accept a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes. Supplementing their diet with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms will promote vibrant colors and optimal health.

  • Environment: Provide a rocky aquarium with plenty of caves and hiding places. A sandy substrate is ideal, as they enjoy sifting through it. While they appreciate open swimming space, the rockwork is essential for them to establish territories and feel secure.

The Blue Peacock Cichlid is a rewarding and long-lived species for any aquarist looking to create a stunning African cichlid display. Its magnificent colors and peaceful nature make it a wonderful and long-term addition to your aquatic world.
