CYPHOTILAPIA FRONTOSA S
The Cyphotilapia Frontosa, also known as the Humphead Cichlid, is a stunning freshwater fish native to the deep, rocky waters of Lake Tanganyika in Africa. These small juveniles, typically measuring around 4-6cm, are a fantastic starting point for any dedicated aquarist looking to raise a beautiful and imposing fish.
While small now, these fish will grow to be true showstoppers in your tank. As they mature, they develop a distinctive nuchal hump on their forehead, which is more pronounced in dominant males, giving them a regal and powerful appearance. Their striking coloration, typically featuring five to seven vertical black bands on a white or blue body, makes them a captivating addition to any large cichlid community.
The Frontosa is known for its relatively peaceful temperament, making it a great choice for a large community tank with other similarly sized and non-aggressive fish. They are a long-lived species, often reaching 10-15 years in captivity, making them a long-term commitment and a rewarding pet to watch grow.
Care and Aquarium Requirements:
-
Tank Size: Although small now, these fish will grow to be large (up to 30cm or more). We recommend a minimum tank size of 75 gallons for a small group, with a much larger aquarium (125+ gallons) being necessary as they mature.
-
Water Conditions: As a Lake Tanganyika cichlid, they require hard, alkaline water with a pH range of 7.8-9.0 and a temperature of 23-27°C.
-
Diet: Frontosas are carnivores. Provide them with a high-protein diet of quality cichlid pellets, and supplement with frozen foods like krill, mysis shrimp, and bloodworms.
-
Tank Setup: Replicate their natural rocky habitat with plenty of caves and crevices for hiding, but also leave open swimming space. A sandy substrate is recommended as they enjoy sifting through it.
-
Community: They are best kept in a group of at least 4-5 individuals to establish a social hierarchy. They can be housed with other large, peaceful Tanganyikan cichlids, but avoid smaller fish, as the Frontosa may view them as a snack.
Bring the majesty of Lake Tanganyika to your home aquarium with these beautiful and unique fish. The small Cyphotilapia Frontosa is an excellent choice for a dedicated aquarist ready for a long-term and rewarding experience.
