The Green Terror, or Andinoacara rivulatus, is a magnificent freshwater cichlid native to the rivers and lakes of South America. These 2" juveniles are a fantastic starting point for any dedicated aquarist, allowing you to watch them grow into a true showstopper with their bold personality and striking colors.

While small now, the Green Terror is known for its beautiful and dynamic appearance. As they mature, their bodies develop an iridescent green-blue coloration, shimmering with a metallic sheen. Their fins are often lined with a vibrant orange or red, and their bodies are covered in a beautiful array of iridescent blue-green spots. Male specimens, in particular, may develop a prominent nuchal hump on their forehead as they age, adding to their majestic appearance.

True to their name, these fish have a strong and territorial personality. They are best suited for a large, semi-aggressive community tank where they can be housed with other robust cichlids of a similar size. Their engaging and curious behavior makes them a joy to watch, but a specific tank setup and careful choice of tank mates are crucial for their well-being.

Care and Aquarium Requirements:

  • Tank Size: While small now, these fish will grow to be quite large (up to 8-12 inches). We recommend a minimum tank size of 55 gallons for a single fish, with a much larger aquarium (75+ gallons) being necessary as they mature and for a community tank.

  • Water Conditions: They are quite adaptable but thrive in a pH range of 6.5-7.5 and a temperature of 24-28°C.

  • Diet: As omnivores, they require a varied diet. Provide them with high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, and supplement with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and krill to ensure their health and vibrant coloration.

  • Tank Setup: Provide plenty of hiding places with rocks, caves, and driftwood. A fine sandy substrate is ideal as they enjoy sifting through it and digging. Be sure to secure any decorations, as they may rearrange the tank.

  • Community: They can be housed with other semi-aggressive cichlids of a similar size. Good tank mates include Oscar fish, Silver Dollars, and other large, robust species. Avoid housing them with very small, delicate, or slow-moving fish.

Bring a touch of vibrant color and bold personality to your home aquarium with the young Green Terror. This fish is a great choice for aquarists looking for a fish with stunning looks and an engaging character.
