Blue Dolphin Cichlid (3"): A Beautiful and Established Profile for Your Aquarium

Bring the charming and captivating Blue Dolphin Cichlid into your home with our stunning 3" specimens. Scientifically known as Cyrtocara moorii (often still referred to by its old name, Haplochromis moorii), this young adult fish is at the perfect size to showcase its unique profile and brilliant blue color, making it an instant centerpiece in any African cichlid tank.

Key Features:

  • Iconic Dolphin-like Profile: At 3 inches, the Blue Dolphin is already starting to develop its signature nuchal hump on its forehead and a downturned mouth, giving it a distinctive and beloved profile that resembles a dolphin. This feature will become more pronounced as the fish matures.

  • Vibrant Blue Coloration: Male Blue Dolphins are known for their solid, brilliant blue bodies. This vibrant hue is well-developed at this size and will continue to deepen, providing a consistent and beautiful flash of color in your aquarium.

  • Peaceful and Intelligent Temperament: While semi-aggressive like most cichlids, the Blue Dolphin is considered one of the more peaceful members of the Haplochromis family. Its calm demeanor and engaging, curious personality make it an excellent choice for a community tank.

  • Well-Established and Hardy: Our 3" cichlids are robust, healthy, and past their delicate juvenile stage. They are ready to thrive in a well-maintained aquarium, offering you years of enjoyment with their lively behavior.

Ideal Tank Mates:

  • Other Haplochromis species (Haps)

  • Peaceful to semi-aggressive Peacock cichlids (Aulonocara)

  • Synodontis catfish

  • Other large, non-aggressive Malawi cichlids

Care Instructions:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for a single fish, but a larger tank of 75 gallons or more is ideal for a community with multiple fish.

  • Water Parameters: Maintain a stable pH of 7.8-8.6 and a temperature of 75-82°F (24-28°C).

  • Diet: This cichlid is an omnivore. Feed a high-quality cichlid pellet or flake food, supplemented with occasional frozen foods like mysis shrimp or spirulina-enriched brine shrimp.

  • Tank Decor: A sandy substrate is ideal as they enjoy sifting. Provide plenty of rock formations and caves to create territories and hiding spots, which helps to reduce stress and aggression.
