The Keyhole Cichlid, or Cleithracara maronii, is a delightful freshwater fish native to the clear, slow-moving waters of South America. These small juveniles are a fantastic starting point for any aquarist, offering a unique blend of a gentle temperament and a fascinating appearance that will captivate any fish keeper.

Known for their shy and peaceful nature, Keyhole Cichlids are an excellent choice for a community tank with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Their name comes from the distinctive black, keyhole-shaped spot on their body, which is a fantastic piece of natural camouflage that helps them blend in with their surroundings. Their bodies are typically a subtle golden-tan color with a dark lateral stripe, giving them an understated yet elegant beauty.

Keyhole Cichlids are a joy to watch. They are active but not aggressive, spending their time exploring the mid-levels of the tank and foraging for food. They are a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking for a hardy, long-lived, and engaging cichlid without the aggression often associated with the species.

Care and Aquarium Requirements:

Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for a pair, with a larger tank required for a group to allow them to establish territories.

Water Conditions: They are quite adaptable and can thrive in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water with a pH range of 6.0-7.5 and a temperature of 23-27°C.

Diet: As omnivores, they enjoy a varied diet. Provide them with high-quality sinking pellets or flakes, and supplement with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to ensure a balanced diet.

Tank Setup: Replicate their natural habitat by providing plenty of hiding places with driftwood, rocks, and dense plant cover to make them feel secure. A fine sandy substrate is also recommended as they enjoy sifting through it.

Community: They are best kept in a pair or a small group. Good tank mates include small tetras, Corydoras catfish, and other peaceful community fish.

Add a touch of peaceful charm to your home aquarium with the young Keyhole Cichlid. This fish is a rewarding and long-term commitment that will provide endless enjoyment.
