The Red Spotted Severum, a captivating color variant of the Heros efasciatus cichlid, is a stunning freshwater fish native to the Amazon River basin. These 2.5" juveniles are a fantastic starting point for any dedicated aquarist, allowing you to watch them grow into a true showstopper. Their bodies are typically a beautiful golden or tan color, adorned with an increasing number of brilliant red or orange spots that intensify as the fish matures.

The Severum is known for its relatively peaceful temperament, especially compared to other cichlids. While they may display some territorial behavior, particularly during breeding, they are a great choice for a large community tank with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Their calm demeanor and striking beauty make them a captivating and rewarding addition to any aquarium.

As "eartheaters," these fish will often sift through the substrate with their mouths, a natural foraging behavior that is both fascinating to observe and beneficial for keeping the tank clean. They are hardy and can be a long-lived species, often reaching 10 years or more in captivity, making them a long-term commitment and a rewarding pet to watch grow.

Care and Aquarium Requirements:

  • Tank Size: While small now, these fish will grow to be quite large (up to 8-10 inches). We recommend a minimum tank size of 55 gallons for a single fish, with a much larger aquarium (75+ gallons) being necessary as they mature and for a community tank.

  • Water Conditions: They are quite adaptable and thrive in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water with a pH range of 6.0-7.5 and a temperature of 24-28°C.

  • Diet: As omnivores, they require a varied diet. Provide them with high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, and supplement with a mix of live, frozen, and vegetable-based foods like blanched spinach or zucchini to ensure a balanced diet and vibrant colors.

  • Tank Setup: A fine, sandy substrate is ideal to facilitate their natural "eartheater" behavior. Provide plenty of hiding places with driftwood, rocks, and live plants (like Anubias or Java Fern) to make them feel secure.

  • Community: They are best kept with other peaceful community fish of a similar size. Good tank mates include large tetras, Corydoras catfish, and other non-aggressive cichlids.

Bring the beauty and engaging personality of the Red Spotted Severum to your home aquarium. This fish is an excellent choice for a dedicated aquarist ready for a long-term and rewarding experience.
