The Tropheus Duboisi, also known as the White-Spotted Cichlid, is a highly sought-after and captivating freshwater fish native to the deep, rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika in Africa. These small juveniles are a fantastic starting point for any dedicated aquarist, showcasing a dramatic and beautiful color change as they mature.

As juveniles, they are a striking sight with a deep black body covered in charming white or pearlescent blue spots. This unique pattern serves as a disguise, and it's what makes them instantly recognizable. As they mature, their appearance completely transforms; the spots disappear, their head turns a vibrant slate-blue, and a thick, bright yellow or white band appears behind their pectoral fins. This incredible metamorphosis makes them a true showpiece in any aquarium.

Tropheus Duboisi are known for their active and energetic nature. While they can be territorial, they thrive in large groups, which helps to spread out aggression and establish a social hierarchy. This makes them a great choice for a species-specific tank or a carefully planned community with other robust Tanganyikan cichlids.

Care and Aquarium Requirements:

  • Tank Size: We recommend a minimum tank size of 55 gallons for a small group, with a much larger aquarium (125+ gallons) being necessary as they mature and to house a larger group.

  • Water Conditions: As a Lake Tanganyika cichlid, they require hard, alkaline water with a pH range of 8.0-9.0 and a temperature of 24-28°C.

  • Diet: Tropheus Duboisi are herbivores. A plant-based diet is vital to their health. Provide them with high-quality spirulina-based flakes or pellets. Avoid high-protein foods, as they are prone to digestive issues like bloat.

  • Tank Setup: Replicate their natural rocky habitat with plenty of stacked rocks to create caves and territories, but also leave open swimming space. A fine sandy substrate is ideal.

  • Community: They are best kept in a large group of 15 or more to prevent aggression and establish a natural pecking order.

The small Tropheus Duboisi is a rewarding fish to keep, offering a unique combination of stunning looks, active behavior, and a truly unforgettable transformation. Bring a piece of Lake Tanganyika's beauty to your home with these incredible cichlids.
